Our House Sign Fonts & Typefaces

All of our fonts have been carefully chosen for one reason: clarity on stone.

Stone house signs are often read from a distance and in changing light conditions, so not every font works well when engraved. The fonts below have been tested across slate, limestone and granite to ensure excellent legibility, balance, and long-term appearance.

If you already have a particular font in mind - perhaps one you’ve seen online - just let us know. We’re happy to check whether it’s suitable for engraving and, in most cases, can make it work.

Material Philosophy

Choosing the Right Stone for Your

At The Bespoke Sign House, we work exclusively with natural stone. Every address plaque we make must balance architectural character with the practical demands of the expansive American climate - remaining legible, durable and visually considered for decades, not just years.

We produce plaques in slate, granite and limestone, each selected for its suitability to different homes and design styles. Our approach to materials is highly selective. Not all stone - even within the same family - performs equally well for external signage.

Granite

Granite is an igneous stone formed from slowly cooled molten rock and is found in regions across the world, from Scotland to India. Composed of quartz, mica and feldspar, it is exceptionally dense and durable.

Its strength and structure give granite a bold, architectural presence. The stone’s density allows for a clean, precise finish, often with a sharper visual edge than more softly textured stones.

Granite signs can be polished to achieve a refined, contemporary surface, creating a crisp and structured appearance that complements modern design-led architecture.

Granite signs are particularly well-suited to:

  • Modern and minimalist homes
  • Urban properties and apartments
  • New-builds with sharp architectural lines
  • Homes seeking a bold, contemporary finish

While granite offers outstanding durability, its stronger visual character means it is best chosen where a clean, modern aesthetic is desired. Our granite house signs are designed to reflect this architectural clarity.

Slate

Slate is a metamorphic stone formed over millions of years under intense heat and pressure. Its fine grain and ability to be split into smooth, stable layers make it one of the most reliable materials for stone signage.

Slate occurs naturally in several colours, including green, purple and red, each influenced by the minerals present during its formation. While visually distinctive, not all slate performs equally when used for external house signs.

Grey slate, traditionally quarried in regions such as Wales, Spain and Brazil, offers the most balanced and dependable results. Its colour is derived primarily from carbon, iron sulphides and fine clay minerals, creating subtle tonal variation without compromising consistency.

When sandblasted and hand-finished, grey slate produces crisp lettering and exceptional contrast, ensuring excellent legibility from the street.

Grey slate signs are particularly well suited to:

  • Period properties and Victorian terraces
  • Rural cottages and stone-built homes
  • Contemporary and modern new-builds
  • Properties requiring clear, readable signage from a distance

For this reason, we work exclusively with grey slate for our slate house signs, where clarity, durability and timeless appearance are paramount.

Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary stone formed over millions of years from layers of compacted marine organisms, shells and coral deposited on ancient seabeds. Over time, pressure and mineralisation bind these deposits into solid stone, giving limestone its distinctive character.

Composed primarily of calcium carbonate and fossilised marine material, limestone has a naturally warm, organic appearance with subtle tonal variation. Many well-known varieties originate from British and European quarries, including regions such as the Cotswolds and Portland.

Its softer tone and surface texture make limestone particularly appealing for homes with traditional or heritage character, where a more relaxed, rustic aesthetic is desired.

Limestone signs are particularly well suited to:

  • Traditional cottages
  • Honey-coloured stone walls
  • Rustic and heritage-style properties

The face of our limestone signs is honed and sealed to create a smooth, refined surface. This reduces surface absorbency, improves initial weather resistance and gives the stone a cleaner, more consistent appearance compared to more open-textured finishes.

For homeowners seeking warmth and character over sharp contrast, our limestone house signs remain a beautiful and authentic choice.
