frequently asked questions
Buying a Slate House Plaque

Are slate house plaques good?
Slate stone is a natural resource that is long-lasting, with highly aesthetic characteristics. It gives a much more natural and stylish appearance, increasing kerb appeal when compared to other artificial alternatives such as plastic house signs.
How much is postage
If you're in the UK, we offer free tracked shipping on all our orders. We offer other postage options at checkout in case you wanted to receive your sign faster for an additional fee. If you're outside the UK, postage is calculated at checkout. Alternatively, you can see how much postage is before finalising your order over on our postage costs and production times page.
'Laser Etched' or 'Engraved & Painted'?
We offer both etched and engraved lettering options for your slate house sign. Etched lettering uses a laser to mark the surface of the slate, giving a more natural appearance. Whereas engraving is done by hand with a sandblaster, creating deeper grooves into the face of the slate which can be painted to a colour of your choice. You can choose which option you’d prefer when you select a template to edit.
Do you supply fixings?
Yes we do. You can choose a fixing type when ordering your sign. All you need to fit your sign to your wall is a drill, a spirit level and a pen. The fittings to attach your sign to your wall are included in your order packaging along with a leaflet with a scannable QR code to our installation guides.
Are your signs easy to install?
They sure are. All our house signs come with an easy installation guide, so you should have your sign-up in minutes! All you need to fit your sign to your wall is a drill, a spirit level and a pencil. The fittings to attach your sign to your wall are included in your order packaging.

The Key Differences Between 'Polished' & 'Natural' Slate
We have two main types of slate on offer for our slate house signs, these are labelled as Polished and Natural across the website. Below are examples to give you an idea of the appearance of each.
-
(Engraved & Painted) Polished Slate
Polished slate, as the name suggests, is polished down to create a glossy, flat surface. This gives it a uniform and modern appearance.
-
(Laser Etched) Natural Slate
Unlike polished slate, natural slate isn't worked, instead the slates natural groovy texture is kept for its unique natural characteristics.
Slate is loved by homeowners worldwide for its elegant and timeless look. At The Bespoke Sign House, we're experts in house plaques. We combine classic engraving with modern technology. If you want an impressive first impression without the high cost, our slate plaques are perfect for you.
