Stone Oil Application Guide

Step one

Get Your Cloth & Oil Ready

Grab a clean microfiber cloth and make sure there's no dirt on it so you don't accidentally scratch your sign. Then, unscrew the cap off your slate oil bottle and you're ready to go.

Step two

Dab Some Oil Onto the Cloth

Scrunch up your cloth in your dominant hand, hold it over the bottle, and give it a quick tip to get a little oil on the fabric. You don't need much, a little bit goes a long way.

Step three

Apply the Oil to the Side of Your House Sign

Apply the oil only to the sides of your sign. Use multiple strokes for full coverage, adjusting the amount based on your sign's size and thickness.

Step four

Add More Oil to Your Cloth if Required

Feel free to add more oil to your cloth if you need to. If it's going on a bit thick, don't worry as we'll wipe away all the extra oil at the end.

Step five

Finish Covering All Four Sides

Oiling the sides of your slate or granite sign darkens them to match the front. (Limestone won't change much, as its color is already uniform). Beyond aesthetics, stone oil adds weather protection. However, because UK weather is relatively mild, your sign will still last for decades even if you skip this step!

Step six

Invert Your Cloth and Wipe Away Excess Oil

Flip your cloth over to a clean spot and wipe away any extra oil from the edges. Give the front of your sign a quick wipe-down too, and you're all set!

Step seven

Admire Your Sign!

Whether your sign just arrived or has been hanging up for years, a quick coat of stone oil is a cheap and easy way to keep it looking brand new! We recommend giving it a top-up every 3 to 4 months. Plus, a single bottle lasts about two and a half years, so you're sorted for a long time.
